Support for Abe cabinet climbs to 46%

Disenchanted independents, women could spell further trouble for Japanese leader

Abe likely will face an emboldened opposition when the Diet reconvenes in the fall.

TOKYO -- Support for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet has recovered to 46%, but independent voters remain deeply dissatisfied, a new opinion survey shows, suggesting that the erosion in his popularity triggered by a spate of scandals may not have run its course.

The figure represents a 4-point improvement from a survey earlier this month, while disapproval declined 3 points -- also to 46%. The latest poll was conducted Friday through Sunday.
