TAIPEI -- With Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections about six months away, it remains unclear whether the two main parties will be able to win a majority of seats.

Each party has announced candidates for the presidential election. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which takes a hard-line stance against Beijing, will field Vice President William Lai Ching-te, right-hand man of current President Tsai Ing-wen.
