Taiwan's presidential election is being contested by three candidates -- Lai Ching-te, chairman of the governing Democratic Progressive Party, center, Hou Yu-ih, mayor of New Taipei City from the main opposition Kuomintang, right, and Ko Wen-je, who heads the Taiwan People's Party.

TAIPEI/TOKYO -- Voters in Taiwan will go to the polls on Jan. 13 to elect a new president to lead the island for four years, starting in May.

The election is drawing global attention, as some analysts in the U.S. see China nearing the completion of preparations for an invasion.
