TAIPEI -- Victory by leading opposition candidate Hou Yu-ih in Taiwan's all-important presidential election would draw a firm line under incumbent Tsai Ing-wen's term, during which she implemented progressive reforms and steered Taiwan away from China's orbit.

The presidential election this Saturday is the tightest race in years, with Hou and his running mate Jaw Shaw-kang, a conservative media firebrand, seen as having a real shot at clinching the leadership. Hou faces the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Lai Ching-te and Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je of the upstart populist Taiwan People's Party (TPP).
