TAIPEI -- After weeks of political horse-trading, it will be a three-way race for the presidency of Taiwan after registration for the election closed on Friday afternoon.

The winner of the Jan. 13 poll -- which China and Taiwan's main opposition party have framed as a choice between war and peace -- will succeed President Tsai Ing-wen, who is constitutionally barred from a third term.
