Taiwan's ruling DPP names William Lai as presidential candidate

Vice president seen as having similar stance as Tsai on China issues

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's ruling party has nominated Vice President William Lai Ching-te as its presidential candidate, paving the way for a heated campaign for next January's election.

The party's Central Executive Committee on Monday announced that Lai will represent the party in the poll to select the successor to President Tsai Ing-wen, who will step down after eight years in office in May next year.
