Tensions rise in the South China Sea

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. and China are locked in an increasingly fierce war of words. Beijing's land reclamation on reefs in the South China Sea to build airstrips and other facilities is stoking tensions.

     The U.S. has declared that it will step up surveillance in the South China Sea. China, meanwhile, has shown no sign of backing down. It calls Washington's moves "provocative actions."
