Tokyo to offer monthly stipend to help defray schooling costs

Gov. Koike says education more costly than national average in capital

Yuriko Koike has made child-friendly policies a priority since becoming governor of Tokyo in 2004.

TOKYO -- Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said on Wednesday that her government will provide benefits of approximately 5,000 yen ($38) per person per month to residents of Tokyo aged 18 or younger to help cover the cost of their education.

Tokyo plans to include the funds for the new program in its budget for fiscal 2023 and begin providing the cash by the end of the year.
