Trump dials up world leaders in phone diplomacy offensive

President talks warmly to Russia and tough to Mexico, but what of China?

TOMOYUKI KAWAI, Nikkei staff writer | China

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump has gotten a number of world leaders on the phone since taking office, talking walls with Mexico, alliances with Russia, and defense spending with NATO allies -- but it remains to be seen how he might handle calling up Beijing.

Trump's hardball negotiation tactics -- coming out strong and watching the other party's response -- are right out of his days as a real estate mogul. He sometimes compromises on certain areas once he extracts a positive result in another.
