BANGKOK -- Controversial legislation to reform the Ministry of Defense, with the aim of preventing military coups, is threatening to drive a wedge between the ruling Pheu Thai Party and pro-military coalition members, raising concerns over renewed political turmoil.
The proposal by Pheu Thai lawmaker Prayuth Siripanich would give the cabinet the power to approve the appointment of generals. The government would also be able to dismiss senior military officers.
