None of the presidential candidates had succeeded to reach more than 50% of the votes at the first round of presidential elections, which took place on May 14, together with parliament elections. Erdogan entered the runoff with a clear advantage of garnering 49.5% of the votes and also his election alliance winning a majority of the parliament comfortably.

From commercial and cultural hub Istanbul to capital Ankara, Nikkei Asia has followed the presidential runoff campaign, as 64 million eligible voters head to ballot boxes, choosing their next president for the coming 5 years.
