WASHINGTON -- The U.S. government is starting the screening of Nippon Steel's proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel, forcing the Biden White House to tread a fine line to not alienate Rust Belt steelworkers ahead of the November presidential election.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States will scrutinize the deal, examining the potential impact on the American industrial base and supply chains for critical technology. The interagency body is believed to have already received the necessary paperwork from Nippon Steel.
