WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Joe Biden spoke directly to the American people on Wednesday night for the first time since abandoning his campaign for reelection, explaining that it was time to hand the torch to a new generation.

Sitting behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office and surrounded by photos of his family, Biden said in the televised address that he believed his record as president, his leadership in the world and his vision for America's future merited a second term.
