WASHINGTON -- The U.S. threat of an investigation into alleged intellectual property thefts reflects President Donald Trump's frustration with Beijing in trying to enlist its help to defuse the increasingly tense North Korea standoff.

Trump authorized Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to look into whether such a probe is merited. "The theft of intellectual property by foreign countries costs our nation millions of jobs and billions and billions of dollars each and every year," the president said at the White House.
