TOKYO -- China's foreign ministry on Thursday said it was "pleased" to learn of this week's phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, after a U.S. media report that Beijing had proposed holding a summit between the two leaders.

"Both Russia and the U.S. are influential major countries. We are pleased to see the strengthening of communication and dialogue between the two parties on international issues," ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, less than two weeks before the Russian invasion's third anniversary on Feb. 24.
