WASHINGTON -- The U.S. assesses that 8,000 North Korean troops are now in the Russian region of Kursk, on the border with Ukraine, and may engage in combat in the coming days, senior officials said Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after a two-plus-two meeting of foreign affairs and defense ministers with South Korea, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "There are some 10,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia and the most recent information indicates that as many as 8,000 of those North Korean forces have been deployed to the Kursk region."
