SEOUL -- When Kim Kang-woo saw video footage appearing to show North Korean soldiers in Russia, he thought of the peers he left behind in the country of his birth.

"They're around my age, it's like they're my friends. They don't want to have to go fight a war in another country," Kim told Nikkei Asia.
