'Protect our children': Shock, panic in Ukraine as Russia invades

Some civilians flee cities while others hide in basements

BELGRADE -- Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has sent civilians running for shelter and fleeing major cities, as they express shock at the unfolding nightmare.

"Many people are leaving Kyiv or hiding in basements," a Greek-Ukrainian journalist told Nikkei Asia. "It's difficult to explain to children what's happening. We tell them it's a game. Lord, protect our children."
