TOKYO -- Vietnamese President To Lam has taken over the duties of Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the Southeast Asian nation's top official who has had health concerns.

According to a statement released Thursday by the party's Politburo, the change of duties was "due to the need to continue to prioritize time for the General Secretary to focus on active treatment."
