Thailand's fascination with gold soars into the cloud

New generation of investors increasingly goes online to speed up trades

BANGKOK -- Thais' love of gold is legendary, with more than 6,000 shops selling jewelry and gold bars across the country. But the vast majority of trading in the precious metal -- which has been on a 30-month bull run -- now takes place in the cloud, with millions of Thais buying and selling it online.

Siri, a 39-year-old office worker, says she was turned on to gold by her sister. Krungthai Bank's Paotang app provided easy access with an initial minimum investment of around 6,000 baht ($180). She sold for the first time in early 2024 when gold hit $2,000 per troy ounce (about 31.1 grams).
