Makoto Shinkai leads next wave of anime filmmakers

'Your Name' director could change the face of the anime industry

RYOSUKE HANADA and KEN MORIYASU, Nikkei staff writers | Japan

TOKYO -- Fans of Makoto Shinkai's blockbuster anime, "Your Name," attending a special Christmas showing in Shinjuku on Dec. 23 were encouraged to celebrate the film by cheering, crying and singing along together -and many did all three, simultaneously.

The girls came dressed as Mitsuha, the film's highschool heroine, and the boys as Taki, the handsome Tokyo teenager, who mysteriously switch bodies and then try to find each other.
