EU spurs African telecom development to win back clout from China

BRUSSELS/CAIRO -- Alarmed by inroads made by China and Russia in Africa, Europe hopes to reassert its influence on the continent with development assistance -- telecommunications in particular. 

The European Union pledged 150 billion euro ($170 billion) in aid package to Africa during a two-day conference that brought together EU leaders and 40 African counterparts last week.
