Student visa clampdown knocks Australian universities off balance

Financially overstretched, schools struggle to adjust to reduced Asian inflows

SYDNEY/MUMBAI -- Raga, a graduate student from India in the University of Queensland's management program, admits she was cagey with the consulate interviewer who reviewed her visa application last year.

Speaking to Nikkei Asia under a pseudonym, Raga says that on the advice of an education consultant, she talked up her closeness to her family and avoided mentioning her interest in staying on in Australia after completing her degree.
