Xiaomi has been developing and testing a new artificial intelligence model on its mobile devices as the smartphone maker seeks to get ahead in the race to develop the technology used to power tools like ChatGPT.

The new lightweight AI model has been under development since a special team was set up in April, and has been successfully tested on devices, founder and CEO Lei Jun said during his annual speech at a company event Monday. The model will be incorporated in the Xiao Ai voice assistant on Xiaomi's handsets, Lei said, in what will be its first application scenario. Internal testing began on Monday, he said.
