BEIJING -- Speaking on the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China this Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the importance of upholding the "one country, two systems" framework.

But his words ring hollow as the freedoms that let Hong Kong prosper are curtailed, paving the way for the Chinese Communist Party to extend its authoritarian rule over the city.
