TOKYO -- If modern history is any guide, political upheaval in Europe will eventually ripple through Asia, destabilizing its security and stability, as well attested by both world wars in the last century.

The Cold War followed the same pattern. After the Iron Curtain descended across Europe after the end of World War II, tensions spread to Asia, deepening the rift between the West and the Soviet bloc.
