TOKYO -- France's surprising election results on July 7 may mark the beginning of significant political turmoil in the country, with potential implications for Japan and other NATO partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

In the National Assembly elections, the New Popular Front (NFP), a coalition of left-wing parties, unexpectedly demonstrated considerable strength, emerging as the largest force in the lower house of Parliament. Meanwhile, the far-right National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, which opinion polls had anticipated would lead, ended up in third place.
