TOKYO -- As Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba focuses on securing support to pass the fiscal 2025 budget in parliament, policy debate on the nation's global competitiveness and long-term future has fallen by the wayside.

Meanwhile, troubling new data from the Foreign Ministry shows that just one in six Japanese citizens, or 17.5%, held a passport at the end of 2024.
