TOKYO -- Is reining in the dollar the top goal of the Trump administration's tariffs? Market watchers are no longer sure.

They had been waiting to see whether U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would make currency-related demands at his meeting with Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato last week. But Kato later said Bessent raised nothing specific.
