TOKYO -- My first trip to a movie theater in three years since before the pandemic was to see "Top Gun: Maverick," starring Tom Cruise.

The aim was to see with my own eyes whether the Japanese- and Taiwanese-flag patches that adorned the jacket of the Navy pilot played by Cruise in the 1986 original were still there.
