TOKYO -- As widely expected, Thailand's parliament failed to elect a new prime minister last week.

The eight-party coalition led by the Move Forward Party, a progressive group that won the May 14 general election, pushed its leader Pita Limjaroenrat for the premier post. There were no other nominees, effectively making it a vote of confidence for Pita.
