TOKYO -- Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has quickly become a major force in the country's politics since he was granted parole in February after serving six months in detention.

The charismatic, populist former leader returned to Thailand last August from self-imposed exile after spending 15 years abroad to avoid prison on conflict of interest charges.
