SoftBank's growth strategy breaks wireless carrier mold

SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son speaks at the company's business conference in Tokyo on July 30.

TOKYO -- Japan's SoftBank Group is building a growth strategy that emphasizes fields beyond its bread-and-butter wireless services.

The company is jazzed about three sectors in particular: the Internet of Things, a catchall for connected devices of all sizes; artificial intelligence; and smart robots. SoftBank aims to create new business models to offset inevitable stagnation in the telecommunications and smartphone segments.
