HONG KONG -- China fell 30 places in the latest edition of Nikkei's COVID-19 Recovery Index as infections continued to rise despite an extended lockdown in its most populous city, Shanghai.
This marks the first time China, now ranked 32nd, has dropped out of the top 10 since the index was launched last July. The world's second-largest economy has taken a zero-tolerance approach to tackling the pandemic, but recent outbreaks of the highly transmissible omicron variant in several parts of the country have shown that its defenses are far from impregnable.
