SHANGHAI -- The Asian Games, which had been set to open in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in four months' time, have been postponed indefinitely, the Olympic Council of Asia announced on Friday, citing ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks in the country.

The move to postpone Asia's premier regional sporting event, which was to run Sept. 10-25, contrasts with China's success in holding the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing as scheduled in February.
