SEOUL -- South Korea is considering tightening border controls as COVID-19 cases hit another record in the country and global fears grow over the spread of the new omicron variant.

The nation's health authorities reported that daily cases jumped to 5,123 on Tuesday from 3,031 the previous day. Total infections reached 452,350, with 3,658 deaths. The number of patients in serious condition marked a record of 723, and the death toll is expected to keep rising.
