
TAIPEI -- Taiwan is pressing ahead with looser COVID-19 restrictions despite daily infections hitting a record 57,188 domestic cases on Wednesday, as fatalities remain very low.
Just eight deaths were recorded Wednesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center. Local case numbers exceeded 50,000 for the first time on Tuesday, a sharp jump from zero on Jan. 1, and 1,209 less than a month ago on April 15.
