TOKYO -- Japan's corporate culture that prizes "greedy work" -- jobs that have long, inflexible hours but pay more -- has become a serious impediment for women to break the glass ceiling. Unencumbered with family responsibilities, twice as many men as women of child-rearing age worked long hours last year, according to a government survey.
Claudia Goldin, a Harvard University professor who won the 2023 Nobel Prize in economics, sees greedy work as the main cause of gender pay gaps in general.
