TOKYO -- Social media platforms are corralling ever more users into their services, causing sharp drops in traffic to news and other websites in Japan. The country's popular websites have seen traffic from Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, fall by 20% to 40% over the past three years, according to a Nikkei analysis.
To hold on to visitors and make their services more attractive to advertisers, platforms are giving less prominence to posts and messages with links to external sites.
