TOKYO -- Sports fans' growing preference for watching social media highlights of their favorite events rather than live broadcasts is shaking the very foundations of the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee, the organizer of the Games, derives 60% of its revenue from selling broadcast rights. But shifting habits in media consumption are casting a shadow over that, with increasing numbers of people -- especially the young -- catching up on sporting action via short video clips.
