China's GAC to charge up EV battery production with new plant

Automaker plans $1.6bn investment to cut dependence on outside suppliers

GUANGZHOU -- Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) will build an automotive battery factory, the government-owned company has announced, aiming to take greater control over its supply chain.

The new plant will mass-produce lithium-ion batteries for electrified vehicles, using its proprietary lithium iron phosphate, and will have a capacity of 26.8 gigawatt-hours.
