GUANGZHOU -- From live music to documentaries, Chinese electric vehicle makers like Xpeng and Nio are trying creative ways to connect with car buyers in a competitive home market.

Xpeng on Jan. 1 introduced its new X9 minivan at an outdoor event near Canton Tower, a Guangzhou landmark.
