TOKYO -- Efforts by hundreds of Japanese companies to cut greenhouse gas emissions will not be enough to fulfill the government's goal for the end of the decade, according to official data released Tuesday.

The stated emissions-cutting goals for fiscal 2030 of 372 companies will decrease greenhouse gases by 40%, falling short of the government's 46% target. The companies' emissions goals were published by the Green Transformation (GX) League, a government-organized group of companies committed to decarbonization.
