HONG KONG -- Asia's first Gay Games will test Hong Kong's ambitions to restore its global status as an open international city and its claims to being an inclusive city as civil liberties erode in the territory.

The 11th edition of the Gay Games will open on Saturday in Hong Kong. The event follows landmark legal rulings that push LGBTQ rights forward, including a court decision in September that urges the government to recognize same-sex partnerships.
