TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has urged top companies to install more women in their boardrooms, but his own ruling Liberal Democratic Party is also lagging behind in efforts to close the gender gap.

Of the candidates the LDP has lined up so far in about 260 single-seat districts for the next lower house, only 21, or just 8%, are women, with only about 30 spots still undecided.
