TOKYO -- The top bench of Japan's Supreme Court on Wednesday heard arguments from a transgender woman on the constitutionality of a law that requires sterilization before citizens can change their legal gender.

The claimant, who identifies as female but was assigned male at birth and has not undergone sex reassignment surgery (SRS), argued that requiring people to alter their genitalia in order to amend their gender on official documents violates "the fundamental human right to have one's gender identity respected."
