HONG KONG -- Hong Kong police blasted prominent democracy activist Agnes Chow on Monday for being irresponsible after she revealed that she left the city to study in Canada and had no intention of returning.

The 27-year-old, who was a core member of a group of young activists, said in a social media post that she had been away for three months and that pressure from the authorities had left her with depression and anxiety. "But after careful consideration, including the situation in Hong Kong, my personal safety, physical and mental health, I have decided not to go back," she wrote on Sunday night, her birthday, in her first public comments since she was released from prison in June 2021.
