HONG KONG -- China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has demanded that consulates and foreign government offices in Hong Kong must share information about locally employed staff, pulling the city closer in line with mainland rules.

In a letter addressed to consulates and the European Union Office that was seen by Nikkei Asia, Hong Kong's representative from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the personal data of staff hired locally, including permanent residents and those living in the city under visa arrangements.
