HONG KONG -- A Hong Kong court on Thursday sentenced a man to 14 months in prison for wearing a T-shirt with "seditious" wording, marking the first application of the city's new national security ordinance.
Chu Kai-pong, 27, had admitted to wearing the shirt and pleaded guilty in a previous appearance at the city's West Kowloon Magistrate Court on Monday. Judge Victor So Wai-tak, one of the designated national security judges appointed by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee, ruled on Thursday that Chu's act was "really not light," as the words on his clothes amounted to advocating for "Hong Kong to be broken away from central authorities' legal administration."
