HONG KONG -- Pro-democracy Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai Chee-ying took the stand in his national security trial on Wednesday, as proceedings resumed one day after 45 activists were sentenced in a separate high-profile security case.

Lai, the founder of the now-defunct independent news outlet Apple Daily and one of the most outspoken critics of the Chinese government, entered the West Kowloon courtroom at about 10 a.m., wearing a gray suit atop a light green sweater along with a pair of black-rimmed glasses. Flanked by officers, he appeared to be in good spirits, nodding and smiling toward spectators who waved at him.
